Matt Barton

pretentieloze gekte van Matt Barton

This is the first part of the extreme animalz movie. It is made with animated gifs collected from the Internet and it is about animals going nuts. In the real world there is a wall of road kill, stuffed, and plastic animals collected from thrift stores, the streets and the trash, also going nuts.

Gair Dunlop

the tomorrows project
This form of the unconventional also greets the viewer in the architectural online space of Gair Dunlop and Dan Norton's, tomorrow's project, where the seemingly disparate words: machine, decay, cyborg, processing and grotesquery, seductively work together to tempt the viewer into play.

Console: it's about control
The concept of the "Industrial Sublime"- of seeing mighty forces at work in the workplace- is receding from the memory of the present day. We're creating a meta-fable of industrial process using humour, reminiscence, and satire, as well as imagery made in real places in dialogue. This is not in any sense documentary. It's an exploration of a modern sensory environment to re-engage the imagination with what it means to structure the world as process, and to apply to human flow and process the technologies of industrial control.

April 28 - June 30 2007

Athanasios Argianas, Hadassah Emmerich, Elke Krystufek, Esther Tielemans

Press Release (excerpt)
I am thinking about Harald Szeeman’s much talked-about exhibition of 1983, “Der Hang zum Gesamtkunstwerk”. In this exhibition, he recounted utopian concepts in Europe from 1800 onward. From his preliminary research for this exhibition, it became apparent that many artists do not restrict themselves to a single medium but use a variety of disciplines to achieve a total effect and feeling.

The exhibition not just in Galerie Akinci records a similar type of desire on the part of four young artists. Athanasios Argianas (b. 1976, Athens), Hadassah Emmerich (b. 1974, Heerlen), Elke Krystufek (b. 1970, Vienna) and Esther Tielemans (b. 1976, Helmond) display paintings that cannot be viewed in isolation but have to be seen in relation to objects, murals, music and design. None of these painters restrict themselves to painting alone. They drive beyond the boundaries of painting and thereby bring new dimensions to this medium. The Greek artist Athanasios Argianas see his paintings, executed on paper and canvas, as inseparably connected to his objects, poems and music. Elke Krystufek is also a painter who draws her inspiration from sources such as her performances, her written work and her films. Recently, she has also been designing clothing and furniture.

Cosmolitan Chicken Project

Atelier Bow-Wow

Founded 15 years ago, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto’s and Momoyo Kaijima’s architectural office Atelier Bow-Wow coined the term of Pet Architecture with utmost pragmatism: in a guidebook they showed buildings that examine the borders of how much you can make out of all those narrow spaces in Tokyo in a very playful way.

Raqs Media Collective "There has Been a Change of Plan" (04:58)

Some of more interesting art today isn't likely to end up in
museums, because it doesn't act like art, at least as the market
persists in defining the term. It isn't crateable and saleable. It
isn't by the singular artist-artisan. It doesn't have a style or a
''look.'' Instead, it is often collaborative and
multidisciplinary. Its beauty lies, as old-style Conceptualism's
did, in information and ideas that are also metaphors, but also in
a pleasure in technology that may be a generational development.

Raqs Media Collective, based in New Delhi, makes art like this.
The collective's core members -- Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula and
Shuddhabrata Sengupta -- work simultaneously in several media,
including photography, film, publishing and the Internet. Their
projects involve collaborations with many other artists, as well
as with contributors for whom the term artist is restrictive or

Chiharu Shiota

The young Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota deals generously with her dreams. Her installations and performances lead into sleep, night and the self-forgetfulness of the dreaming body. Far from Japan, her loss of orientation and her fear of losing the personal and individual have become the leitmotifs of her art. From them arise theatrical images inviting viewers' participation.
