Insects and the Body

Miya Masaoka's work with skin and insects and video uses image and metaphor to explore human and insect societal issues of race, herding, gender and sites of control and explores empathy and the interconnectedness of inter-species interactions. She has performed with live Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and thousands of honeybees on stage, using their sound and movement as a sound source within sound and video compositions.

My name is Spinoza art manifestation in Amsterdam • may-june-september 2009 •
On 8 May 2009 begins the art manifestation My name is Spinoza. The manifestation offers a platform for artists, arts organisations and the public and finds out whether the ideas of this influential philosopher have, after 400 years, stood the test of time. Baruch de Spinoza’s was born in Amsterdam in 1632. His revolutionary ideas about God and religion, good and evil, reason and emotion, form the pillars of such core values as tolerance, respect and freedom of speech. By presenting exhibition, performances, nterventions and talk shows, the manifestation brings the philosopher a monumental homage in the form of an art event. Spinoza has an inquisitive and investigative attitude which ties in well with art and in which artists recognise themselves. In association with various cultural organisations, (international) artists were invited to develop projects that challenge the public and put it to the test. The public domain has been delibera tely sought out as a place for dialogue and discussion. See the complete programme:

Foodprint: June 27 - August 23, 2009
The program Foodprint. Food for the city takes place over the course of two years and deals with the impact of food on the culture, structure and functioning of cities in general, using the city of The Hague as a case study. With a series of activities Stroom aims to increase people's awareness of the value of food and to give new life to the way we view the relationship between food and the city. The program invites artists and designers to develop appealing proposals on the subject, while at the same time establishing a clear connection with entrepreneurs, farmers, food experts and the general public.
