Walking as Art

In Act 1 of Waiting for Godot, Estragon discards his boots because they are too tight. At the beginning of Act 2, Vladimir points triumphantly to the boots as proof that the two are in the very spot where they waited in vain for Godot the previous night:

ESTRAGON: They're not mine.
VLADIMIR: [Stupefied.] Not yours!
ESTRAGON: Mine were black. These are brown.
VLADIMIR: You're sure yours were black?
ESTRAGON: Well, they were a kind of grey.
VLADIMIR: And these are brown? Show.
ESTRAGON: [Picking up a boot.] Well, they're a kind of green.

Dietrich Wegner

Every society accumulates contradictions amidst their ideals. Dietrich Wegner uses those contradictions, putting opposites together in large-scale sculpture that feed on the friction between two things that should not make sense together. He creates images that are safe and unsettling, abject and beautiful. He shows us how a mushroom cloud can resemble a tree house, an anus a vortex, a suicide bomber a vulnerable human being.

A documentary about some of the thousands of inventions that did things we never thought needed doing, or in ways we never considered doing them. A respectful, yet humorous tribute to the inventors whose vision, however far-reaching, was just a little off the mark

Save Our Souls

Save Our Souls was founded in fall 2005, it was a year marked by the tsunami, bombings and clash of cultures. When we created our first collection it was impossible not to get affected, the result was dark, beautiful and ambitious.
Save Our Souls believe that almost every cultural worker has a dream of, if not saving the world, at least make it better or more beautiful. But it is problematic to make new products when, in fact, very little stuff is needed.

Louise Hopkins

Louise Hopkins re-shapes the surface of things: consciously interweaving paint into and out of a pre-existing object, evolving it into something entirely new, while at the same time, retaining the resonance of what lies beneath. Whether painting across furnishing fabric, sheet music, maps, or newspapers, Hopkins creates a meticulously controlled interplay of contradictions: between erasure and exposure, beauty and ugliness, love and loss, language and meaning.

Tim Best

I am photographing myself and others performing various emotional reactions to uncertain causes. These images are inspired by my past experiences as a professional in the IT industry's public and private sectors. Within the industry I observed a lot of uncertainty about job security and the customer's whim.

Simon Keenleyside

Simon Keenleyside’s recent paintings explore places on the fringes of his Essex home; peripheral or marginal sites, familiar to the artist from his youth. Considerable parts of this backcountry is inhabited with remnants of former times; disused water towers, banks of crates and containers abandoned by local industries that surround the towns and bleak, abandoned buildings; most recently the disused Runwell Psychiatric Hospital has interested the artist.

Push play or go to

Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe is a short documentary film directed by Les Blank in 1980 which depicts director Werner Herzog living up to his promise that he would eat his shoe if Errol Morris ever completed the film Gates of Heaven.
The film features Herzog cooking his shoes (the ones he claims to have been wearing when he made the bet) at the Berkeley, California restaurant, Chez Panisse with the help of chef Alice Waters. (The shoe was boiled with garlic, herbs, and stock for 5 hours.) He is shown eating one of the shoes before an audience at the premier of Gates of Heaven at the nearby UC Theater. He did not eat the sole of the shoe, however, explaining that one does not eat the bones of the chicken.

Steven Laurie

Through using the suburban backyard/garage as a platform, I am investigating the ideas, images, and behaviors that are culturally ascribed to masculine identity and ‘manly’ performance. The framework of the suburban backyard within this body of work provides an interesting tension that highlights the slippages within the normative ideas/constructs of labor and leisure, gendered identity and performance. My current studio practice involves modifying and tuning gas powered machines that meld impetuous activity with the concepts of labour and leisure. Through performing demonstrations of these machines, I use the byproducts of sound, smell and performance to provoke discussion and reaction.
