Carey Young

Unlike much other current neo-Conceptualist work, Carey Young's seems relatively unconcerned with calling attention to its historical distance from such sources by engaging in overt (and possibly nostalgic) commentary on it. Perhaps surprisingly, her more straightforward endeavor to continue the Conceptualist project of critically examining art as both idea and institution draws strength from this lack of manifest art-historical knowingness.

Shelley Jackson

In 2003, the author Shelley Jackson announced that she would publish a 2,095-word short story called “Skin” on participants who agree to be tattooed with randomly assigned words from her text. The tattooees alone will read the story, which will be complete when the last commissioned word is inscribed on its bearer, sometime in the next few years. It will not be published on paper. Jackson asks applicants (she has many more than she can use) to read her novel, The Melancholy of Anatomy, to ensure that they like her writing before committing to a word, because “Skin” is what she calls a “hidden track” (in the pop-music sense) of the book; both explore the relationship between words and the body.

Daniel and Geo Fuchs

Das Fotografenpaar Daniel und Geo Fuchs arbeitet seit über vierzehn Jahren gemeinsam an konzeptionellen Projekten. Durch den Sammler Selim Varol entdeckten sie die Welt der Toys, Figuren aus Plastik, die Lieblingsprotagonisten der Filmindustrie aber auch Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens in Plastik nachbilden. Varols Sammlung umfasst etwas 10.000 Figuren ­ Actionfiguren und amerikanische Comichelden wie Batman, Superman oder Hulk sowie Figuren aus japanischen Mangas, aber auch Nachbildungenvon George Bush, Adolf Hitler, Elvis Presley, Silvester Stallone, Che Guevara, Saddam Hussein oder Bin Laden. Daniel und Geo Fuchs haben die Toys in meist großformatigen Fotografien portraitiert oder in szenische Zusammenhänge gebracht. Es entsteht eine spannendes Wechselspiel zwischen Realität und Fiktion.

Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs

Lately the two artists renounce the photographic image and concentrate on the concept of objects. Often they set up rules and consider the production of sculpture as a game, passing the ball from one to the other. In Transformer Block the statuette of a Madonna transmogrifies into a gun and then a camera to eventually turn into a religious figure again. The installation Growhomes gathers small houses on stilts with green roofs. Due to the strong plantation lamps the vegetations grew explosively causing the cottages to tumble. The Whole Shebang is set out to be a course in-between impromptu and déjà vu, applying the irony of postmodernism on an exigent practice of sculpture.

In Miriam Vlaming's paintings, figures exist in a fantasy-like dimension. But Vlaming's trademark is her deliberate imperfection, the quality of incompleteness. At first glance, Vlaming's protagonists seem childlike, busying themselves with simple games; yet we are left with a feeling of disillusionment that is far from romantic or sentimental.

Frances Trombly

Frances Trombly’s work includes trivial and derisory stuff, like a collapsed cardboard box, cleaning rags, a blue tarpaulin, a mop and even receipts from familiar stores like Publix Supermarket. Of course, the objects are completely familiar, lying scattered across the gallery space -as if accidentally dropped there. The fact that each one has been carefully hand loomed in woven fabric isn’t discernible until one arrives within a couple of feet of the object. Once you have understood the game, it shifts to an exercise in looking closely at each thing to see exactly how it was made and how it is different, under scrutiny, from the object it mimics.
