Open City: Designing Coexistence
With three exhibitions, a unique collaboration with a public broadcaster and an extensive side program of lectures, film screenings, debates, workshops, an international master class and other events, the fourth edition of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) embraces the theme of the Open City, a city that is diverse, lively and socially sustainable, where people can productively relate to each other culturally, socially, as well as economically.
More specifically, with the theme Open City: Designing Coexistence, the 4th IABR raises the question of social cohesion in the city from the point of view of its designer: how can architects and urbanists make realistic contributions to the sustainable quality of the urban condition.

The work of Luuk Bode, Daan Botlek and Erosie recently developed into an interesting similar approach, compared to being from very different planets in the past. An excellent reason to invite them for an exhibition!
In his recent works Luuk Bode (1972) combines his fascination for the image-overload of contemporary popular culture with abstract painting of the twentieth century.
Daan Botlek is interested in the human physique, psychology and sociology and uses this metaphorically in his often recognizable view on the dark side of mankind.
Erosie (1976) uses, denies or twists the parallels between graffiti, art, typography en illustration and combines these disciplines completely on his own conditions.
All three of them play with their diverse backgrounds in the search for a way to react on their love/hate relationship with today's excessive (visual-) culture.
