The Package Museum has the mission to "preserve and display specimens of American package design from the early decades of the 20th Century." Each photograph includes a quarter in the frame to establish a scale reference.

Lucas Murgida

Appearing on city sidewalks or littering back alleys, decommissioned furniture is given a chance at a second life. Items like an old cathoderay television or a suspiciously stained sofa appear at random and dare passersby to adopt them despite their faults. Sometimes these byproducts of commodity culture’s planned obsolescence have FREE signs attached, assuring the potential owner of their transitional status. Working with this logic of the street-side gift, San Francisco based artist Lucas Murgida occupied a piece of furniture as a performance project. “A cabinet will be constructed and left on a sidewalk. I will be hidden inside and not reveal myself until someone assumes possession and brings the cabinet to their home.” By locking himself into the bottom compartment, Murgida transformed a cabinet into a trojan horse.

Often depicting Romantic landscapes reminiscent of those by Caspar David Friedrich and JMW Turner, Orr's paintings are peopled by a strange assortment of figures that have been recycled from other sources.

prophets & penitents confessions of a chair

A narrative on an almost sacral theme, for the designer the creation of a chair is like that of a string quartet to the composer: a unique reading of its creator’s cerebral signature, revealing the modus operandi against the zeitgeist.
To celebrate the existence of this daily-life four-legged comfort-bringer, some 30 designers were invited to the Oratorio della Passione at Sant’Ambrogio – Milan’s oldest church – to express their personal confessions on chair prototyping.

strange sisters

I'm in it for the covers, plain and simple. The artwork. The typography. The titles. At present, I haven't read a single one of these little gems in its entirety, and it's not just because the books might very well disintegrate in my hands. I have little desire to read the books because the text simply CANNOT live up to the masterfully drawn female figures and knowing glances that grace Brandon House covers or the outrageously over-the-top paintings by Robert Bonfils or Eric Stanton, or even — for that matter — the misshapen faces and laughable nipple-less breasts created by nameless hacks of yesteryear.

Rave (to young to die)

When I was younger I used to participate in raves. There was a particular venue I frequented the most. It was located in an area downtown were there was very little nightlife, making it all the better for all night parties. The events took place at a six-story advantage from the street, the view was equipped with very large floor to ceiling windows. At a certain point in the night a sizable group of partiers would convene here. We had found that at a very early point within the day the street sweepers were present, and working. Large machines hushing down the roads below. Amongst the delirium, that was the atmosphere of the event, the street sweepers became an almost ethereal sight. The event becomes increasingly difficult to recreate.

Ciaran Murphy

Ciaran Murphy’s practice is predominantly an enquiry into what it means to perceive the world through the human eye. The finished paintings depict objects treated in isolation, tiny snippets of time and ambiguous contexts or sites that seem to hold out the vague anticipation of an event. As well as the individual paintings the grouping of the work becomes important; meaning and interpretation in individual work becomes both reliant and unhinged within the context of the larger group.
