Kirk Hayes

Perhaps one reason I have been so taken with Kirk Hayes's paintings is that they overcome my ingrained dislike of trompe I'oeil. Long ago I wrote off trompe I'oeil painting as a labor-intensive and pointless activity that produces decorative and irritating effects designed to get oohs and aahs from an easily impressed audience. But I have oohed and aahed with the rest of them at Hayes's paintings, as well as laughed out loud and, in a few cases, felt slightly queasy.
