Hunter Longe

Hunter Longe’s work facilitates a situation in which new meanings can be derived from pre-existing objects, images, and actions. Therefore, the work is an attempt to reveal a parallel reality in which the same physical world and human constructs exist with different ways of thinking about them. The destruction and re-creation of context points out the subjective in an apparently objective scientific outlook, allowing for a train of thought in which science and art are equal efforts at understanding the unknown. Each work strives to contain formal and/or conceptual tension in order to expose a dialectic between seemingly opposed forces. Mediums are pushed into the realm of other mediums --sculptures are drawn, drawings move like video, and videos look like paintings.

It Hurts To Laugh: R.I.P. Cartoonist John Callahan 1951-2010

As has been reported in numerous outlets, cartoonist John Callahan died on Saturday, July 24, after an extended hospital stay. He was well-known for what is now being politely referred to in obituaries as his "politically incorrect" sense of humor. John Callahan was not politically incorrect. John Callahan was just plain wrong.

Maria Serebriakova

In her painting series Maria Serebriakova explores the processes within the working consciousness. The artist travels along the landscapes of her mind and records her travel memories on canvas. Her images-phantoms are circles appearing as if suns or constellations, rhythmic lines that arc across the surface of some paintings, architectural elements of buildings, variable horizon line, silent spaces filled with air. The predominating colour of her works is grey in tone, meditative, known as a borderland or mediation between black and white. However, its tonality in each case in Serebriakova paintings is verifiably different. What does the artist find while meditating at the wasteland, at the borderland of Night and Day, Space and Time?

Project Morrinho: Southbank Centre Favela

Project Morrinho is a Brazilian social project that takes the form of a miniature city created by young people in Rio de Janeiro. Using brick, paint and other found materials, their model metropolis is inspired by the landscape, architecture and everyday life of the favelas that span the city.

‘Our aim,’ the creators explain, ‘is to bring positive change to our local community, as well as challenge the popular perception of Brazil’s favelas.’

The project has become a world-wide phenomenon, including exhibiting at the 2007 Venice Biennale.

Musicus Willem Breuker overleden

AMSTERDAM - De musicus en componist Willem Breuker is vrijdag in Amsterdam op 65-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat maakte Bernard Hunnekink vrijdag bekend. Hij zit in het Willem Breuker Kollektief, dat Breuker in de jaren zeventig heeft opgericht. Breuker was al enige tijd ziek.

Arnold Mario Dall'O

Arnold Mario Dall’O ist ein vielseitiger Künstler, der stets zwischen verschiedenen Ausdrucksformen pendelt, von der Malerei bis zur Installation. In seinen Arbeiten setzt er Bilder aus der religiösen Welt, der Volkskultur, aus medizinischen Lehrbüchern oder aus der Zeitung zu einer Art Kaleidoskop zusammen, das Kraft ausstrahlt und Interesse weckt.

Nicht von ungefähr hat die internationale Kritik seine Arbeiten als regelrechte „western files“ bezeichnet. Dall’O konfrontiert uns mit der stets faszinierenden und vielfältigen westlichen Kultur, mit ihren semantischen Fallen und den symbolischen Abweichungen, aber auch mit ihrer außerordentlichen Verführungskraft.

Hilde Overbergh

The confrontation between nature and culture as echoed in man-made constructions is the recurring theme through the work of Hilde Overbergh. Exploring the ways in which we create our own hideaways from the outside world, Hilde’s work reflects on the strategies we devise to make our everyday environment livable. In this architectural context, the boundaries between the protected interior and world outside sometimes seem to evaporate, offering the viewer a look through the walls, zooming in on the life behind them. While the pictorial vocabulary and use of colors have evolved over the years, Hilde’s work has always been and remains a reflection of the world as she perceives it.

Conrad Ventur

Conrad Ventur is recongised for creating complex environments and installations that raise questions regarding time and space, whilst exploring the subject in relation to historical and contemporary technologies.

The Internet from which Ventur selects his footage exists as a collective space that is in constant flux and which disrupts the perception of a continuous flow of time. It is no coincidence that the artist uses technology that offers multiple non-hierarchical temporalities in his installations; immersive environments, which present the viewer with an expanded cinematic narrative that questions our sense of reality, perception of history and the passage of time.

Erik Benson

Erik Benson's paintings are informed by architecture and landscape found in the everyday. I build my paintings using a cut and paste collage method. Paint is poured onto a glass table. It dries and is cut into shapes, and collaged to create the forms and structures in my work. I am interested in the mimetic relationship between the architectural subjects in the paintings and the process in which they are produced. I’m interested in how this construction process allows in a painting vocabulary an exploration of unexamined things.
