Jessica Williams

Jessica Williams draws her subjects from her immediate surroundings: first-hand accounts, personal and found photos, video stills, and daily life ephemera.
The resulting work inhabits a space between anticipation and recollection, between unconsciousness and recognition. There is a free sense of historical reference in the work – a space where expressionism, youtube video captures, suburban LA interiors and cinematic intimacy can coexist. The influence of photography and a sense of the captured moment pervade the work. Both relate to Williams' ongoing fascination with memory, metaphor, mythology, and symbolism. Each work is a physical record of her conversation with a subject; some have been painted over many times with visible traces of previous stages in the thick brushwork while others are composed with delicate veils of color.
